Chavan Points Out `Errors’ in GST Notification; Govt Sees No Problem

Former Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan has claimed the finance ministry made an “error“ while notifying date of applicability of sections of the GST Constitution Amendment Act in the state.
He said local body tax and Octroi collection (in Maharashtra) must stop and collections since September 16 be returned after the “unprecedented blunder.“
The government on Monday said there was no issue with the notification and a transitional provision in the constitutional amendment law allows levy of excise and other indirect duties.
“There is no legal infirmity in these notifications. Law dept has confirmed that there appears to be no legal requirement to issue any further clarification or notification in this regard,“ revenue secretary Hasmukh Adhia said in a tweet. – www.economictimes.indiatimes.com [21-09-2016]
