PREFACE – English Dictionary
It is indeed a big challenge to produce a new dictionary of English that is the most widely used and the most dynamic language of the world today. The editors have throughout been conscious of the fast evolving character of the language. English in the twenty first century is quite different from what it used to be in the earlier centuries. Every year new words are added to the lexicon. Newspapers, magazines and numerous new publications contribute new vocabulary items to English at a mind-boggling rate. It is needless to say that all this is related to the ever-widening horizons of knowledge. With the passage of time English has also become the richest language of world by absorbing items from perhaps all other languages.
At the same time, we cannot ignore the fact that the core English vocabulary comprises just about 2000 words. One can easily communicate in English by mastering this basic vocabulary. This is also the means by which any new word can be easily understood and explained. The users of this dictionary will find this basic principle in operation.
