Know the Taxpayer Bill of Rights – Part 1

This is the first council in a summary of two parts of the rights granted to all taxpayers.

All taxpayers have rights. The Bill of Rights as a Taxpayer take these rights of the tax code and groups them into 10 categories. Taxpayers who interact with the IRS must know their rights, which are highlighted in the Publication 1 , Your Rights as a Taxpayer:

The right to be informed. Taxpayers are entitled to know how to comply with tax laws. They have the right to clear explanations of the laws and procedures of the IRS. Taxpayers have the right to know about decisions that affect their accounts IRS with clear explanations of the results.

The right to a quality service. Taxpayers are entitled to receive prompt, courteous and professional assistance when dealing with the IRS. They also have the right to speak to a supervisor about poor service. IRS communications must be clear and easy to understand.

The right to pay no more than the correct amount of tax.Taxpayers should only pay the amount legally owed tax. This includes interest and penalties. The IRS must apply all tax payments correctly.

The right to challenge the IRS position and be heard.Taxpayers have the right to oppose formal actions or proposed actions of the IRS. They can also provide additional justification documentation. Taxpayers can expect the IRS deems appropriate objections and documentation quickly and fairly. Taxpayers can expect a response when the IRS disagrees with the position of the taxpayer.

The right to appeal a decision by the IRS in a separate forum. Taxpayers are entitled to a fair and impartial appeal most IRS decisions. This includes appeal certain fines. Taxpayers are entitled to receive a written response regarding a decision by the IRS. Taxpayers generally have the right to take their case to court.

The IRS Publication 1 include when sending a notice about a variety of topics, such as an audit or collection matter. All facilities IRS publicly display the rights of taxpayers.
