IRS: Tax professionals need a PTIN 2018; continuing education for tax season annual program expires at the end of the year

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reminds preparers federal tax that must renew their Preparer Identification Number (PTIN) which expires on December 31, 2017.

Anyone who charges for preparing or assisting in the preparation of any federal tax return or claim for refund must have a PTIN IRS PTIN force in 2018. The number should be used as presented in the statements prepared. Failure to comply with this requirement could result in fines.

For people who have a PTIN 2017, the renewal process only takes a few moments online. The preparer can begin inwww.irs.gov/ptin . If you plan to register for the first time, the PTIN application can also be completed online. No fee is charged to obtain or renew a PTIN. Paper applications sent by mail may take four to six weeks to process.

Enrolled agents, whether they prepare tax returns also must have a PTIN to maintain their status.

Participation in the annual program of tax season

The IRS also reminds tax preparers who have taken courses to increase their knowledge and improve their preparation for tax season that courses could make them eligible for the annual program of tax season the IRS (in English).

This voluntary program is for tax preparers with 18 hours of continuing education (CE) on basic issues about filing taxes and updates, ethics and other courses of federal tax laws. This week, the IRS will send emails to 5,000 tax preparers who only need a few more of CE courses to participate in 2018. However, only have until December 31 to get the courses they need.
