This electronically. Submit electronically reduces errors on tax returns because the software does the calculations, points out common mistakes taxpayers and requests the missing information.

Send a paper return to the right direction. Taxpayers who file paper should consult IRS.gov or the tax form instructions for the correct direction where to file and avoid delays in processing.

Review all figures. While the software catches and prevents many errors in the declarations submitted electronically, mathematical errors remain common on paper statements.

Get the right routing numbers and account. Request direct deposit of a federal tax refund in one, two or even three accounts is convenient and allows taxpayers to access their money faster. Make sure the routing numbers and account of the financial institution entered in the declaration is accurate. Incorrect numbers can cause a refund to be delayed or deposited into the wrong account.

Sign and date the statement. If you file a joint return, both spouses must sign and date the statement. To electronically file an individual tax return, taxpayers must electronically sign the tax return a personal identification number (PIN): either the PIN self-selection or PIN method of tax professional.

Attach all required forms. Those with paper returns must attach W-2s and other forms in front of their statements that reflect the withholding tax. Attach the other necessary schedules and forms the upper right corner of tax form in the order listed in the instructions.

Keep a copy of the statement. Once ready to present, taxpayers should make a copy of your signed declaration and all forms for your records.

Request an extension to file. For taxpayers who can not meet the deadline of April 17, requesting an extension to submit it easy and avoid fines for late filing. Use Free File to request an extension electronically or on paper the Form 4868 (SP), Application for Automatic Extension to File Tax Personal Income United States. Other quick, free, and easy ways to get an extension include Direct Pay IRS (English) System Electronic Federal Tax Payment or pay with a credit card or due . No need to file a Form 4868 requesting an extension separated when an electronic payment is made and indicates that it is for an extension. The IRS will automatically count as an extension. But note that while an extension grants additional time to file, tax payments must be paid on 17 April.
